Matthew Maxam is a cellist, bassoonist, and composer from St. Paul, Minnesota. He studied biology and music at the University of Minnesota, where he was a cello student of Tanya Remenikova. He currently studies bassoon with Dr. Ariel Detwiler and performs regularly throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota on both instruments.

As a composer, Matthew has written works ranging from solo pieces to orchestral scores. His music has been featured in Classical Minnesota Public Radio’s Minnesota Varsity competition, and his sonata for bassoon and piano received its premiere at the 2024 International Double Reed Society conference and was subsequently published by TrevCo Music.

Outside of music, Matthew works in the medical device industry and is an instructor and master-level practitioner of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan, a traditional Korean martial art. He enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with his partner, Jacob, and their cat, Mahler.
